ENGLISH SUMMARY
Alerts have been heightened across Eastern India as ‘Cyclone Arnab’—a severe cyclonic storm that formed in the Bay of Bengal—approaches the coast of Andhra Pradesh. Disaster management systems have been mobilized in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha in anticipation of heavy rainfall and strong winds. Authorities have taken steps to relocate residents from low-lying areas to safe shelters and ensure the availability of emergency assistance.
According to warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Arnab—which intensified into a severe cyclonic storm—was projected to make landfall along the coastal stretch between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Recent forecasts indicated that landfall would likely occur between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM on Wednesday, October 28. The Meteorological Department subsequently confirmed that the landfall process had begun.
Warnings were issued regarding maximum sustained wind speeds ranging from 115 to 135 km/h, with the potential for gusts reaching up to 150 km/h. The public has been advised to remain vigilant, as the cyclone is expected to cause rough sea conditions along the coast and inundation in low-lying areas.
Extensive precautionary measures have been implemented across Andhra Pradesh and Odisha to mitigate the impact of the cyclone. Residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been relocated to safe locations. Relief camps have been opened, and healthcare workers as well as emergency service personnel have been placed on standby.
According to reports from October 27, over 180,000 people across Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have been moved to safety. Authorities have taken measures to secure fishing boats and regulate maritime travel.
Restrictions have also been imposed on the transport sector due to the threat posed by the cyclone. Certain train services have been cancelled as a precautionary measure, and some flight operations connected to the Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam airports have been disrupted.
Restrictions have been placed on coastal roads in Visakhapatnam. Disruptions to power supply have also been reported due to strong winds and heavy rain. Disaster response teams and medical units have been deployed to handle emergency situations.
Weather forecasts indicate that the impact of the cyclone will not be limited to Andhra Pradesh alone; heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is also expected across various districts in Odisha.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant, as strong winds and thunderstorms are likely in some areas. Residents are also advised to take necessary precautions, given the potential for waterlogging and flooding in low-lying regions. The Meteorological Department had issued a warning that rainfall is likely to intensify across various parts of Jharkhand due to the indirect influence of the cyclone. Yellow and orange alerts have been declared in certain districts, and schools have been granted a holiday.
Weather conditions may vary across different regions depending on the intensity of the rainfall and the path of the cyclone. Consequently, authorities have urged the public to stay updated by regularly monitoring official weather alerts.
People in areas likely to be affected by the cyclone must strictly adhere to the instructions provided by the authorities. It is advised to avoid unnecessary trips to coastal areas and to remain vigilant in regions prone to flooding. Fishermen must refrain from venturing into the sea, in accordance with the issued weather warnings.
As the path and intensity of the cyclone may change, it is crucial to prioritize official announcements. Following the directives of disaster management agencies can help minimize risks.
